The "bird flu" has been ruffling some feathers around here for the last year or so and tourists have been staying away in flocks. One newspaper ran a story with this quote from a local farmer talking about his brood of hens:

"They bled from the nose and the backs of their heads turned purple and then black, and then they died."

Sure makes me want to move there.

Other highly desirable reasons for passing on the opportunity to retire in Laos include some car and bus bombings, armed gangs of thugs preying on both locals and tourists and a steadily escalating crime rate with stolen foreign passports on top of the list of most desirable booty.
