Cambodia for Retirement - Living in Cambodia

retirement in thailand concept Although they're still trying to live down their "killing fields" reputation, the Government of Cambodia is working hard to attract foreign visitors and residents and the money that comes with them.

There's plenty of apartments for rent in Phnom Penh and prices are still reasonable. Unfortunately, the best way to find one is to go there and beat the streets. Internet listings are few and far between and you don't want to wire money to a faceless person before you arrive.

There's a happening nightlife in and around Phnom Penh with bars and nightclubs doing a brisk business. The government occasionally sticks their noses into the scene as evidenced by a ban a few years ago on discotheques and karaoke club for some reason.

The word lately, however, is that Khmers in Phnom Penh are up to their old racial profiling tricks and "foreigners" are starting to feel a bit unwelcome. But that knock can be made against any number of countries with cheap beer and warm weather.

Any number of expats who have made the move to Sihanoukville think they have made the right choice. Maybe the people are friendlier because it's less commercial. It's a highly personal choice.

Much of the buzz is about the ease of long stay visas. Basically, $250 gets you a one-year business visa .. while Thailand keeps moving the goal posts.
